Carbon graphite electrode is a general term for common graphite electrodes. Can be divided into natural graphite electrodes, artificial graphite electrodes and so on. Graphite electrodes are mainly used for electrodes for various electric arc furnaces; artificial graphite electrodes are also used for various electrolysis electrodes such as alkali metals and alkaline earth metals. In general, carbon graphite electrode is widely used in metallurgical, chemical and other industries.
Carbon Graphite Electrode Classification
Carbon graphite electrode can be mainly classified into the following six types depending on the production method, and they will be described one by one below.
(1) Natural graphite electrode.
The natural graphite electrode is an electrode produced from natural flake graphite. The natural graphite electrode can be prepared by adding coal pitch to natural graphite and kneading, forming, baking and machining. Its resistivity is relatively high, generally 15~20μΩ·m. The biggest disadvantage of this kind of carbon graphite electrode is their low mechanical strength, which is easy to break during actual use. Therefore, only a very small number of small-sized natural graphite electrodes are now available for some special applications.
(2) Artificial graphite electrode.
The petroleum coke or asphalt coke is used as a solid aggregate and coal tar pitch as a binder. After mixing, forming, roasting, graphitizing and machining, an artificial graphite electrode (abbreviated as graphite electrode) can be prepared. The artificial graphite electrode is a high temperature resistant graphite conductive material. According to different raw materials and production processes, the carbon graphite electrode with different physical and chemical properties can be prepared and divided into ordinary power graphite electrodes, high power graphite electrodes and ultra high power graphite electrodes.
(3) Anti-oxidation coated graphite electrode.
The anti-oxidation coated graphite electrode adopts “alternating spray-sintering method” or “solution impregnation method” to form an anti-oxidation coating on the surface of the processed graphite electrode to reduce the oxidation consumption of the graphite electrode. The price of this like carbon graphite electrode has been increased, and there are some problems in its use. Therefore, there is currently no widespread promotion of the use of anti-oxidation coated graphite electrodes in China.
(4) Water-cooled composite graphite electrode.
The water-cooled composite graphite electrode is a conductive electrode that is used after the graphite electrode is bonded to a special steel pipe. Since the operation of connecting the electrodes is troublesome and affects the production efficiency of the electric furnace, it has not been widely used at present.
(5) Hollow graphite electrode.
The hollow graphite electrode is directly pressed into a hollow tube when the electrode is formed or drilled at the center of the electrode during processing, and the other production processes are the same as those of the artificial graphite electrode. The production of hollow graphite electrodes can save carbonaceous raw materials and reduce the weight of the hoisted graphite electrodes. By using the hollow zone passage of the graphite electrode, it is also possible to add the alloy material and other materials required for steel making or to pass the required gas. However, the molding process for producing hollow graphite electrodes is complicated, the raw material saving is limited, and the preparation yield is low, so the hollow kind of carbon graphite electrode is not widely used.
(6) Regenerated graphite electrode.
The regenerated graphite electrode is prepared by using recycled artificial graphite scrap and powder as raw materials, and adding coal tar pitch by kneading, molding, roasting and machining. Relative to the coke-based graphite electrode, such a carbon graphite electrode’s resistivity is too large and its performance index is poor. At present, only a small number of small-sized regenerated graphite electrode products are used in the field of refractory production.

In summary, most of the above graphite electrodes cannot be widely applied to actual production. Therefore, what we usually call, the carbon graphite electrode used in the smelting field can be considered as an artificial graphite electrode, that is, graphite electrode.
